Six local businesses returned last week from a business improvement “Destination BootCamp” held in Longmont, Colorado, where they leaned hundreds of new methods to bring more customers and tourists to Phillips County.
Among the group to attend include: Stacie Wenzl – Wenzl Drug, Erik Willer – Willer’s Casual Dining, Ginger Tweedy – Area Insight, Setul Parikh – Mark V Motel, Debra Dillon – Logan area business, Dustin Cheney – Phillipsburg Chiropractic Center, and Kera Nuckolls – Discover Phillipsburg Main Street as the Community Coordinator.
Phillips County Economic Development committed to fund the registration fee for six Phillips County businesses and one Community Coordinator to attend per year for four years. This is the third group to attend the two and one-half day, 20-hour workshop that also included approximately twenty-five other business representatives from across North America.
Destination Business BootCamp was created by marketing consultant Jon Schallert, who teaches independent business owners on how to reposition their businesses as “consumer destinations”.
According to Schallert, a business using his Destination Business strategies can compete effectively with stores like Wal-Mart and Home Depot and significantly impact a local community.
Schallert notes that it is not uncommon for destination businesses to create change in an entire city, by drawing consumers, from miles around, outside the immediate marketplaces of the community.
“The Destination Business BootCamp is a must do for any small business owner who wants to set themselves apart from, ahead of, or to excel faster than the competition,” says Phillipsburg chiropractor, Dr. Dustin Cheney. “Your competition is not your competitor down the street. Your competition is the world. In today’s society, almost anything is a click away. With the tools I learned at the Destination BootCamp taught by Jon Schallert, I know that I can beat the click and continue to offer our community the highest quality chiropractic and natural health care services in the region.
Schallert’s Destination Busness BootCamp is held in Colorado three times annually. Schallert has worked with independent business owners since 1983, speaks to thousands every year, and is the President of The Schallert Group, Inc., Longmont Colorado. One newspaper called Schallert “the marketing guru rooting for the retail underdogs”. Business owners interested in attending may contact Phillips County Economic Development at 785-543-5809 for more information, or one can visit Schallert’s website at www.DestinationBootCamp.com.

Maxwell Berry’s Wildflowers: Dr. Maxwell Berry’s hobby was Photography and he was fascinated with the beauty of the Kansas prairie flower. Using a single lens Reflex 35 mm camera and a 50 mm macro-lens, Berry photographed wildflowers in Greenwood County, where he was born, Wilson and Woodson counties in Kansas.
Dr. Berry found great enjoyment in the time spent outdoors. He pursued wildflowers in full bloom. “Timing is critical,” Berry said, “since wild flowers bloom for only a few days and then say good-bye for another year.” Wanting a good home for his wildflowers, Berry donated the entire collection the Hansen Museum in the mid-seventies.

Boeve’s time travel story, Wishing You Home, is set in 1945 during the last months of WWII and is about Bobby, a ten-year-old boy who lives in the fictional town of Elmwood, Kansas with his mother and little sister.
Bobby knows his father is in the midst of the fighting in Germany and he lives with the fear that he will not come home, especially after his best friend’s father is killed.
Boeve’s publishing credits include four middle grade historical fiction novels, and adult western and its sequel, titled Crossed Trails, to be released by Whiskey Creek Press in June, several articles, children’s short stories, and the two serial stories listed above.

A group of eleven Phillips County business owners and community leaders attended the ground breaking event otherwise known as the Summit Business Conference in Boulder, CO on October 18 – 20th. Jon Schallert, Expert-Founder of Destination University handpicked (9) world-class authors and experts and assembled them into one unprecedented line up. These nine speakers touched on subjects such as Putting Humor to Work, The Fine Art of Small Talk, The New Rules of Business Success, and Putting Creativity into Your Business as well as Winning the Business of Boomer Big Spenders, Leveraging the Media and Getting Free Publicity and more! This conference was also the first time that the new electronic social networking tool known as the “Poken” was unveiled to the United States. This tool was used by everyone at the conference as a way to collect Business and Contact information, you simply touch the “Poken” Spark to another and it instantly captured their contact information, you may then turn around, take it home and sync all of that information onto your computer. This is certainly a revolution in the way that Businesses communicate and keep in touch with their customers and we were the first to experience it!
We all know that building a business and community is just like climbing a mountain, you get stuck and you need people to help pull you up. Phillips County Business Owners and Community Leaders are all too familiar with this mountain and decided to take matters into their own hands. The opportunity to attend this prodigious conference would have not been possible had it not been for dollars granted by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation as well as help from the Phillips County Economic Development. Sixty attendees from all across North America attended this Small Business Conference, of which eleven came from Phillips County. It was announced, leading up to the Conference, that the community to bring the most people to this event would win the opportunity to have Jon Schallert come to their town for a day and host a workshop worth up to $8,000. It is with upmost honor to announce that Jon Schallert will be making his way to Phillips County in 2012 as our County had the most people attend from across the nation!

The Kansas Department of Commerce announced the winners of the Main Street Awards of Excellence at the annual Kansas Downtown Symposium at Memorial Hall in Independence, Kansas.
The event, which began Wednesday October 12, 2011 and ended Friday October 14, is sponsored by the Department’s Kansas Main Street program and provides community developers and business leaders a chance to network, attend workshops and discuss downtown development in Kansas. The annual event typically draws nearly 200 business and community leaders interested in downtown development, including city and county officials, entrepreneurs and small-business owners, as well as Main Street directors, board members and volunteers.
The Kansas Main Street program helps community volunteers revitalize their city’s historic business district. The program tackles complex issues of revitalization, capitalizing on downtown’s history and identifying the resources of the community itself. The Kansas program started in 1985 and provides management training, consultation visits, program evaluation, design assistance, business enhancement strategies, incentive dollars and training for board and committee members and program directors. Kansas Main Street is a self-help program. Staff provides technical assistance but the responsibility and credit for success rests with the community leaders who offer time, expertise and enthusiasm to revitalizing downtown.
Discover Phillipsburg Main Street is happy to congratulate Erik and Nicolina Coulimore for receiving the Excellence in Architectural Design award for Couli Kaffee and First National Bank for receiving the Community award. Discover Phillipsburg Main Street took home the Excellence in Fundraising award for our historic playing cards. The committee is very appreciative of the support given from PCED and Discover Phillips County. Since 2008, board members of PCED have provided support to help offset advertising expenses. These funds have annually spent back into our businesses community.
