To make sure every minute counts for their patients and relatives, Hospice Services needs your help. The good news is you can help Hospice Services by supporting the 28th FUN-d Dinner & Auction. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20th.

“Our annual fundraiser has been a great way to raise money, but more importantly it’s a time to have fun. That’s why we try our hardest in emphasizing the word FUN.” Administrative Assistant of Hospice Services, Inc. Julia Schemper said. One way Hospice Services has done this is from the variety of items given to either the raffle, silent, or live auctions. “We’ve been fortunate that each year donors come up with unique donations to draw attention or increase attendance to this event,” said Schemper.

The realm of the auction is wide and varied, so financial support or gift of special talents, (i.e. painting, woodworking, quilting) or merchandise (either new or antique) would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to donate to the auction or help, contact Hospice Services office at 543-2900 or 1-800-315-5122. The hospice staff can also help with suggesting ideas of what to give. “Each year community members share ideas with us of the items they think will be fun or hits,” said Schemper. Hospice Services does not guarantee the suggestions. “We can never predict what the attendees want to bid on. Sometimes people attend just to bid on a particular item, but end up bidding on other items. That unique donation may have helped Hospice Services out more than the donor realized,” stated Schemper.

If you have given in the past a Hospice Services representative may be calling to see if you wish to donate again this year. There will be a program listing donations. Donations must be received by Friday, March 16, to be listed in the program.

“Fundraising is only a small part of what we do, but everything we do depends on it,” said Sandy Kuhlman, Hospice Services, Inc. Executive Director. Hospice Services uses the charitable fund towards:

-Covering the care for families unable to afford hospice care due to no medical insurance coverage.
-Supporting educational opportunities for nurses, social workers, volunteers and other staff.
-Supporting the hospice volunteer program allowing families some needed free hours while trained volunteers provide care for their loved one.
-Raising awareness in the community about the benefits of hospice at the end of life journeys.
-Cover the cost of the bereavement program that assists families served by Hospice Services as well as anyone in the community experiencing grief.

“Our Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers feel committed to our past and future donors to make sure funds are used to financially assist those in need with hospice care,” said Kuhlman. Hospice Services has provided care to Phillips County for thirty years and hopes to continue serving Phillip County for years to come.

Once again author Eunice Boeve, Phillipsburg, is participating in the “Newspapers in Education” program, which features stories and historical facts twice a year.

As part of her involvement, Boeve has written a new chapter series to run in the following newspapers from January 24 thru March 15: Hays Daily News, The Salina Journal, The Hutchinson News, The Garden City Telegram, and The Ottawa Herald.

Boeve’s time travel story, Wishing You Home, is set in 1945 during the last months of WWII and is about Bobby, a ten-year-old boy who lives in the fictional town of Elmwood, Kansas with his mother and little sister.

Bobby knows his father is in the midst of the fighting in Germany and he lives with the fear that he will not come home, especially after his best friend’s father is killed.

Boeve’s publishing credits include four middle grade historical fiction novels, and adult western and its sequel, titled Crossed Trails, to be released by Whiskey Creek Press in June, several articles, children’s short stories, and the two serial stories listed above.

Salina artist, Michelle Mead is the illustrator for the series. She also illustrated last year’s story. WWII veterans Keith Whitney and Rosco Matteson were helpful in the writing this story.

A teacher’s guide is available for use in the classroom.

For over a dozen years, residents of Logan along with Phillips County Farm Bureau have done their part to insure that Kansas history is not forgotten. Each year on Kansas Day, the community comes together to pass on knowledge of the past and share artifacts and items that portray Kansas history with area students.

This year will be no exception, from 9am – 3pm on Friday, January 27, 2012; Kansas Day will once again be celebrated at the Logan Fire House.

For visitors, admission is free to see hands-on demonstrations, Indian artifacts, bobbin lace being made, along with living history exhibits such as corn shelling, wheat milling, milk separating, butter churning, old time games, old time kitchen utensil and spinning wheel demonstration.

There will also be displays ranging from antique toys, early-day lighting, olden-time farming techniques and antique communication devices. In addition, the Solomon Valley Players re-enactors will provide demonstrations and will be on hand to lend an authentic Old West feel to the day.

Busloads of school-children from throughout the area will be brought in to enjoy the day. The event is also open to the general public. The Dane G. Hansen Museum and the Logan Historical Museum will also be open during the day.

The Dane G. Hansen Memorial Museum is proud to present the “35th Annual High School Art Exhibit”. Art students from area schools look forward to showing off their unique artistic talents in the Hansen Museum gallery as we look forward to displaying their fabulous works. This year’s exhibition will be February 10, 2012 to March 11, 2012 and consists of a variety of art forms. Displayed by category, they are: watercolor & tempera, ink & scratch board, oil & acrylic, sculptural & 3-D, pencil & drawing, graphic design, jewelry, ceramics, colored pencil, printmaking, pastel, crayon, charcoal and mixed media.

Students strive to create a piece of art that represents him or her as an artist, whether by personality, creativity, excellence of quality, or even their mood. Some pieces may be a whimsical creation from the artist’s own imagination, while others are reproductions of a given lesson. Whatever the case may be, these students put on a show for all to see.

This annual exhibition speaks highly for our area high school students and the instructors who sharpen the skills and expand the minds of our youth. Schools invited to participate in this year’s exhibit are Norton, Palco, Stockton, Smith Center, Logan, Phillipsburg, Hill City, Grainfield, Ellis, Osborne, Plainville and WaKeeney.

Museum Hours are M-F 9-12 & 1-4; Sat. 9-12 & 1-5; Sun. & Holidays 1-5. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. We are handicapped accessible and there is never an admission fee. For more information about this and other exhibits, contact Shirley at 785-689-4846 or check out our web at http://www.hansenmuseum.org/

The Dane G. Hansen Memorial Museum is pleased to present “Gordon Parks: Crossroads” a fascinating exhibition that features 45 memorable photographs drawn from all aspects of Parks’ storied career will be on display December 23, 2011 through February 5, 2012.

In 1938 Parks purchased his first camera at a pawn shop. He pursued taking pictures with gusto and within months his probing portraits of African-American women were exhibited in the windows of the Eastman Kodak store in Minneapolis. While Parks pursued numerous hard-hitting documentary assignments for Stryker, he also accepted commissions in fashion and glamour photography, initially for Midwestern department stores, and soon for Vogue and Glamour magazine.

Parks became the first black staff photographer at Life magazine in 1949, where he would remain on the masthead for a quarter century. With his first two photo-essays for Life – on the gang wars of Harlem, and on the latest Paris collections – he announced his remarkable range, His intimate photo essays on the Black Panthers, the nascent Black Muslim movement, and the Rev. Martin Luther King JR.’s death remain classics – “my sentiments lay in the heart of black fury sweeping the country,” he later wrote – but equally classic were his extended photo-portraits of cultural icons as varied as Barbara Streisand, Langston Hughes, Alexander Calder, Ingrid Bergman, Duke Ellington and Muhammad Ali. “Success among whites never made Parks lose touch with black reality.” Malcolm X wrote in his autobiography.

A group of eleven Phillips County business owners and community leaders attended the ground breaking event otherwise known as the Summit Business Conference in Boulder, CO on October 18 – 20th. Jon Schallert, Expert-Founder of Destination University handpicked (9) world-class authors and experts and assembled them into one unprecedented line up. These nine speakers touched on subjects such as Putting Humor to Work, The Fine Art of Small Talk, The New Rules of Business Success, and Putting Creativity into Your Business as well as Winning the Business of Boomer Big Spenders, Leveraging the Media and Getting Free Publicity and more! This conference was also the first time that the new electronic social networking tool known as the “Poken” was unveiled to the United States. This tool was used by everyone at the conference as a way to collect Business and Contact information, you simply touch the “Poken” Spark to another and it instantly captured their contact information, you may then turn around, take it home and sync all of that information onto your computer. This is certainly a revolution in the way that Businesses communicate and keep in touch with their customers and we were the first to experience it!

We all know that building a business and community is just like climbing a mountain, you get stuck and you need people to help pull you up. Phillips County Business Owners and Community Leaders are all too familiar with this mountain and decided to take matters into their own hands. The opportunity to attend this prodigious conference would have not been possible had it not been for dollars granted by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation as well as help from the Phillips County Economic Development. Sixty attendees from all across North America attended this Small Business Conference, of which eleven came from Phillips County. It was announced, leading up to the Conference, that the community to bring the most people to this event would win the opportunity to have Jon Schallert come to their town for a day and host a workshop worth up to $8,000. It is with upmost honor to announce that Jon Schallert will be making his way to Phillips County in 2012 as our County had the most people attend from across the nation!
